Engineer β†’ PM β†’ Builder of Things That Matter πŸš€

Hey there! πŸ‘‹ I’m Vishal Sharma β€” a builder at heart who loves creating things that make a positive dent in the world.

The TL;DR on Me

For the past 4+ years, I’ve been on an adventure at SigNoz (YC W21), helping grow it from zero to an open-source observability platform trusted by thousands of teams. I started as the first backend engineer, built core systems handling billions of traces, and eventually shape-shifted into Product Manager. Yeah, I’m that guy who can debug your database and debate your roadmap. πŸ˜„

What’s this place? 🏑

This is my digital garden β€” a cozy corner of the internet where I share what I’m learning, building, and thinking about.

  1. Blog β€” Deep dives on observability, open source, product building, and lessons from the trenches
  2. Life β€” Travels, reflections, and the beautiful chaos of everyday life.
  3. Notes β€” Learnings, unpolished thoughts, and explorations β€” my playground of ideas

Some highlights from the journey πŸš€

  • 40x improvement in trace database(clickhouse) performance (yes, forty times!)
  • Led 300+ user calls - demos, feedback sessions, and a lot of debugging β€œwhy isn’t my data showing up?”
  • Insights from user calls and some magic helped boost user activation by 40% and average revenue per account by 45%
  • Built and launched the SigNoz SaaS platform
  • Published 100+ technical blogs/docs with sample code on OpenTelemetry to help developers get started

Before SigNoz, I was at OkCredit building high-throughput systems (500k+ rpm, no pressure πŸ™ƒ), won 2 hackathons, and earned the β€œBest Newbie” πŸ† award. I was also into ML/AI before it was cool β€” built drone software at IIT Madras, trained deep learning models, and created a COVID-19 predictor with 98% accuracy during the pandemic.

Things that spark joy ✨

  • Building β€” there’s nothing like the thrill of shipping something new that actually helps people
  • Open Source β€” I genuinely believe in building in public and the magic of community-driven software
  • Non-fiction books β€” I’m a certified non-fiction nerd πŸ“š! Check out what I’m reading on Goodreads
  • Problem-solving β€” 1,000+ algorithmic problems solved, ICPC Regionals veteran, Top 100 out of 180,000+ in HackWithInfy (that’s top 0.05%!)
  • Minimalism β€” keeping life and code simple
